Jane Stothert. Artist. Printmaker.
Art has always been at the root of all Jane's career decisions. She chose teaching
primary school children, because of the opportunities of working with them
creatively through art. Wanting to work more in the world of art she took a degree
in graphic design and worked for Minale, Tattersfield and Partners, a top
international design group in London. Finally she realized her dream and trained as
a fine artist.
Jane has a studio in Lavender Hill, Battersea, London and has exhibited in many
group shows including the Contemporary Print Show at the Barbican, Fresh Art,
On the Wall at Olympia and the Oxo Gallery. She was recently selected to show at the
Bite exhibition at the Mall Galleries in 2012.
From 1997 to 2007 she organized group exhibitions with her colleague Pete
Mountford, as Art 3 in Battersea and Chelsea. In 2007 she co-curated a
collaborative print show with the Southbank Printmakers and printmakers from the
Palatinate, Germany, which was held in Landau in Germany.
Jane became interested in simplifying her images into colourful and geometric
hard-edged shapes during her time as a graphic designer.
To prepare for a painting or print she makes lots of drawings, simplifying them as
she goes along. Recently she has started to make blind drawings (drawing
without looking at the paper), which result in unexpected shapes that would not
happen from an observed drawing. From her drawings she creates colourful
collages which can be manipulated until the desired effect is finalised. The image
is then transposed on to a canvas. It is important to her to eliminate the texture of
the canvas, so that nothing interfers with the colour. Her main influences are Josef
Albers and Bridget Riley. She draws inspiration from London and her travels
abroad.
Jane has also worked on several commissions for a property company in
London and a Pharmaceutical company in the Middle East.
